Inlays and Onlays
Inlays and onlays are custom-made restorations used when a tooth has too much damage for a simple filling but does not yet need a full crown. They are made to fit precisely and are bonded securely into place.
An inlay sits within the biting surface of the tooth, while an onlay extends to cover one or more of the cusps. Both are typically made from tooth-coloured ceramic or composite material, taking an impression or digital scan of your tooth to create a restoration that fits with real precision.
Because they are custom-made in a dental laboratory, inlays and onlays usually take two visits to complete: one to prepare the tooth and take impressions, and a second to fit the finished restoration.
What is the difference between an inlay and an onlay?
An inlay fits within the grooves of the tooth, while an onlay extends further to cover one or more of the cusps. Your dentist will recommend the most suitable option based on the extent of the damage.
Are inlays and onlays better than a filling?
