Root Canal Treatment
Root canal treatment (endodontics) is used to treat infection or damage inside a tooth, removing the affected tissue so the tooth can be saved rather than extracted.
Inside every tooth is a soft tissue called the pulp, containing nerves and blood vessels. When this becomes infected or inflamed, often as a result of deep decay, a crack or trauma, it can cause pain and, left untreated, may lead to an abscess or loss of the tooth.
During root canal treatment, the infected pulp is carefully removed, the inner chamber and canals are cleaned and shaped, and the space is then sealed to prevent further infection. Our specialist endodontist Mr Robert Crawford sees patients requiring more complex root canal treatment, working alongside our general dentists.
Is root canal treatment painful?
Treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Some mild sensitivity afterwards is normal and can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relief.
How many visits does root canal treatment take?
This depends on the complexity of the case. Straightforward cases may be completed in one or two visits, while more complex cases may need further appointments with our specialist.
What happens after root canal treatment?
The tooth will usually need a filling or crown afterwards to restore its strength and appearance. Your dentist will advise on the most suitable option for your tooth.
